The coolest yard in town
"[My kids] are very popular now. All their friends want to come over to play,” said Jodi Cyzick, motioning at the 20-foot-tall tangle of twisting, brightly-colored plastic tubes towering above her backyard, inside of which at least several of her five children, plus a friend or two, were climbing, sliding and shrieking with laughter.
Boldly into the digital age
It was about five years ago when things changed, seemingly overnight, says Frank Marshman, sitting in front of the soldering iron and microscope in his shop.
Still looking, still waiting
The past few months have been a series of dead-ends for Brandon Bebout. Some of his résumés have seemed to disappear into black holes, some have generated tepid responses, a good number have resulted in follow-up discussion, at least seven have progressed to a formal interview, and exactly zero of them have led to a job offer.

Stories About Local Bands and Artists
A dose of comedy’s big buzz
Ten years ago, Bill Del Gallo set his VCR to record the stand-up comedy
showcase, “Comedy Central Presents.” He watched the tape over and over,
mimicking the jokes of Lewis Black, well aware that “the biggest faux
pas is to steal stuff from another comedian,” he says.
Shapiro comes back to the ’Burg
Carl Shapiro smells like money.
Red River Rollercoaster is on a roll
Most musicians probably dream of winning awards, selling millions of records and playing sold-out arenas. Chris Howdyshell dreams of small audiences, steady gigs and the ultimate perk — bottled water.
Coming home
Jarrod Smith grew up playing guitar for friends at parties in Bergton, 30 miles northwest of Harrisonburg. Bergton is a small town with a population a little more than 500, and its big event is the annual fair in August.
Advantage: Napp
John Naparlo is silent now, drowned out by the country tunes of Johnny Napp. Naparlo loves basketball and Napp, music. It’s too bad Naparlo and Napp are one in the same.
