The scoop on game day

For Washington Redskins fans Dawn and John Morris, the last mega-exciting Super Bowl Sunday was in 1992, the most recent time their team made it to the big show — and 10 years before the couple threw their very first Super Bowl party. The key to a successful game day get-together, according to Dawn Morris, is not about the game. It’s about the food.

Catch of the season

For most Valley residents, the heavy snowfalls and frigid temperatures at the end of 2009 were reasons to hunker down at home, swaddled in blankets and sheltered from the elements. For Pat Velanzon, the harsh weather provided the perfect incentive to slip outside for an hour — or five.

Happy tails for some Harrisonburg pups

On Dec. 11, Rocktown Weekly published an article about the PetSmart Rescue Waggin’, a transport vehicle that relocates dogs to shelters with higher adoption rates in order to save them from being euthanized. In December, 14 dogs were transferred from the Rockingham-Harrisonburg SPCA to Animal Welfare Association in New Jersey; all 14 have since been adopted.

Stories About Local Bands and Artists

A dose of comedy’s big buzz

Ten years ago, Bill Del Gallo set his VCR to record the stand-up comedy showcase, “Comedy Central Presents.” He watched the tape over and over, mimicking the jokes of Lewis Black, well aware that “the biggest faux pas is to steal stuff from another comedian,” he says.

Shapiro comes back to the ’Burg
Carl Shapiro smells like money.

Red River Rollercoaster is on a roll
Most musicians probably dream of winning awards, selling millions of records and playing sold-out arenas. Chris Howdyshell dreams of small audiences, steady gigs and the ultimate perk — bottled water.

Coming home
Jarrod Smith grew up playing guitar for friends at parties in Bergton, 30 miles northwest of Harrisonburg. Bergton is a small town with a population a little more than 500, and its big event is the annual fair in August.

Advantage: Napp
John Naparlo is silent now, drowned out by the country tunes of Johnny Napp. Naparlo loves basketball and Napp, music.  It’s too bad Naparlo and Napp are one in the same.
