Keeping the interfaith
The Harrisonburg and Rockingham Thermal Shelter, better known as HARTS, had a special treat for its guests last week. At the Catholic Campus Ministry at JMU, HARTS provided the local homeless with the option of watching the winter Olympics, playing games or listening to the InterVarsity Christian Fellowship play music. Paired with meals, HARTS provides a comfortable atmosphere for those stopping by.
Seniors put a little salsa in their step
Now seniors can participate in the same Latin-style fitness classes with Zumba Gold, a class that offers just as much upbeat music and fun but with lower impact.
‘Art of a woman’
Forget about the plastic mannequins that typically occupy storefront windows. Soon, folks window-shopping along South Main Street will be able to enjoy a little theater, right from the sidewalk.
Snooki wows sold-out crowd
More than 1,000 James Madison University students and reality TV fans packed into Memorial Hall March 3 to get a little closer to the Jersey Shore.

Stories About Local Bands and Artists
A dose of comedy’s big buzz
Ten years ago, Bill Del Gallo set his VCR to record the stand-up comedy
showcase, “Comedy Central Presents.” He watched the tape over and over,
mimicking the jokes of Lewis Black, well aware that “the biggest faux
pas is to steal stuff from another comedian,” he says.
Shapiro comes back to the ’Burg
Carl Shapiro smells like money.
Red River Rollercoaster is on a roll
Most musicians probably dream of winning awards, selling millions of records and playing sold-out arenas. Chris Howdyshell dreams of small audiences, steady gigs and the ultimate perk — bottled water.
Coming home
Jarrod Smith grew up playing guitar for friends at parties in Bergton, 30 miles northwest of Harrisonburg. Bergton is a small town with a population a little more than 500, and its big event is the annual fair in August.
Advantage: Napp
John Naparlo is silent now, drowned out by the country tunes of Johnny Napp. Naparlo loves basketball and Napp, music. It’s too bad Naparlo and Napp are one in the same.
