Members and staff of the United Nations are no doubt traveling first class to the next conference in Geneva, where they will be served the finest food and drink. For all the good it does, the U.N. should be heading to a cemetery instead.
A humanitarian disaster is unfolding in the nation of Zimbabwe. At one time it was called the "breadbasket of Africa." Now, millions are in danger of starvation due to the idiotic policies of strongman Robert Mugabe.
Inflation in the nation is running at 2,200 percent. Tens of thousands of citizens are fleeing to other nations due to economic hardships. Political opponents of Mugabe are also beaten, jailed or killed by government thugs.
But now, Zimbabwe is scheduled to become the head of the UN Commission on Sustainable Development. Is there any nation on Earth more unsuited for that position?
England, as well as a few other European nations, have objected to this, for obvious reasons.
"What does sustainable development have to do with human rights?" the Zimbabwe ambassador to the UN told the BBC. There is a certain bizarre logic to that question.
Must it be noted that the United Nations should be helping people around the world, not empowering corrupt, oppressive governments that are killing their own citizens.
This incident, alas, is another tragic event in a long line of tragic events that the U.N. has countenanced. Even the idealistic supporters of the U.N. must be weeping with sorrow at the unfulfilled hopes and promises.
